The Sherman was designed in 1941 as an improvement on the earlier Lee and Grant medium tanks, and embodied the results of careful study of tank warfare in the early years of WW II. Following initial production in 1942, large numbers of Shermans were issued to the British Army and, as the war progressed, the type became accepted as the standard Allied medium tank. Various versions were built incorporating improvements in armament and performance. Amphibious Shermans played a leading role in the invasion of Normandy in1944. The Sherman Mk I weighed approximately 30 tons and had an armament of 1 turret mounted 75 mm gun and 2 light machine guns, the armour thickness being 3 inches.
